Abstract:
The ever growing number and improving living standard of the population necessitate and make it evident that the requirement of an advance of waste disposal strategies. Currently, the problem of solid waste management in developed countries is almost solved. The global trend of environmentally sounded waste management is the so called 3Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle) as well as pre-treatment and disposal on the landfill. For example, the development of sustainable landfill technology took about four decades in Germany. There was an intention by German government from 2020 onwards, all municipal waste in Germany is supposed to be recovered and sanitary landfills are to be abolished. In many developing countries, like Ethiopia, land filling will be actually the first essential step towards environmentally sound waste management practice. The objective of this paper is to show development processes of waste management and sanitary landfill construction in developed countries, method of landfill location search as well as the situation of dumping site in developing countries today and to propose adapted sustainable economically affordable waste management system for Adama city which can be replicable in other part of the country too. Landfills are disposal sites designed, constructed and operated to minimize environmental pollution. In developing countries, we can´t speak today from landfills but only dumping sites without any barriers, management, and environmental controls. The main risks of uncontrolled dumps are: life-threats and health hazards for people working and living on site, air pollution by burning of waste, contamination of soils and water, attraction and breeding of vermin, etc. The pressure for the implementation of a sustainable and environmentally compatible waste and resourcemanagement increases in the developing countries because environmental protection and climate change mitigation is a global issue. For a successful implementation it is decisive that responsible persons and decision makers understand the scientific background of the necessary of resourcesprotection. Therefore, to protect the environment and the health of the population properly designed land fill construction and disposal of solid waste is crucial to improve the livelihood of the population in the country.
