Abstract: Two new species of Acanthobthrium van Beneden, 1850 from the spiral intestine of Pastinachus sephen Forsskal, 1775 from the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, off the northern coast of Iran, are described. The worms were studied with light and scanning electron microscopy to analyse the surface ultrastructure. Acanthobothrium jalalii n. sp. belongs into the category 1 species group together with 40 species. This tiny new species retains the gravid proglottid on the strobili, and differs from the other category 1 species by a small total length, proglottids, testes, terminal segments in an apolysis condition and the shape of the cirrus sac. Acanthobothrium sphaera sp. n. is a small worm that belongs into the category 2 species group that is characterized by ≤15 mm total length, ≤50 proglottids, ≤80 testes and asymmetrical ovary together with 34 species. Acanthobothrium sphaera n. sp. differs from the category 2 species in small total length, proglottids, testes, a vaginal sphincter, loculus ratio and ovary type. This is the first report of Acanthobothrium from the cowtail stingray, Pastinachus sephen, from the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. Ansprechpartner
