Abstract:
The World Wide Web contains much location-related data. Thus, users may request location-based content on specific web sites, e.g. bus schedules or local events. In order to turn the web into an information system with geographic knowledge, clients' locations needs to be known. While remote localisation is not sufficient, each client must specify its current location. As a side-effect, the client has control about who obtains this personal information. This also provides an opportunity to protect the user's privacy by transforming a coordinate (e.g. determined by GPS) to another reference system such as postal codes which are then used to request location-based content. The chair of Geodesy and Geoinformatics at University Rostock is developing a prototypical web browser supporting different mechanisms for requesting location-based information from the web.
