Abstract: The chemical structure of organic nitrogen (N) compounds in soil and other environmental samples is still insufficiently known; hence knowledge about stabilization and turnover processes of organic N in the environment is fragmentary. Synchrotron-based X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) at the N K-edge is a relatively new technique in speciation of inorganic and organic N compounds. The oral presentation summarizes progress in this field during the past 5 years. Starting from a spectra library of relevant inorganic and organic N compounds, examples are given for applications of N XANES in soil related research. These examples involve various kinds of samples such as dissolved organic matter, soil clay fractions and bulk soil samples. The research questions tackled included landscape and management effects on soil organic N, transformations of heterocyclic N in soil and heat-induced alterations of soil organic matter. It will be shown, how N-XANES complements other analytical approaches such as C K-edge XANES and soft ionization mass spectrometry. Reference: Leinweber, P., J. Kruse, A. Gillespie, F.L.
