Abstract:
The way grasslands are managed is of great importance to landscape ecology. This is because of the proportion of land that is used as grassland (30% of all farmland in Germany) and because of the special role that grasslands play in the protection of species and their habitat.
The use of grassland is usually coupled with animal production. The economic figures for different production lines like dairy farming or beef production at the farm level in turn, determine the use and management of grassland by the farmer. In Europe, apart from production costs and prices, market regulations and direct payments as a result of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), determine the economic framework for the agricultural use of grassland. The aim of this study was to analyse the latest CAP reform came into effect on 1 Jan. 2005 with special respect to effects on further grassland use. It would be mainly done by economical calculations on the production line level.
The results show the main changes imposed by the CAP reform that are relevant for grassland management. So the different intensities of grassland use for dairy farming will drift even further apart: favourable sites will be more intensified while more and more grasslands that are of particular interest for nature protection will be taken out of use and fallowed. Low input/extensive beef production on permanent grassland with heifers ore fattening of steers will be uneconomic and will only play a minor role. The use of suckler cows and extensive grazing will also, in the future, be the most important way of utilizing and maintaining grassland for nature protection.
