Abstract: The pikeperch (Sander lucioperca), also named “Zander”, is a popular game and food fish in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (MV), Northern Germany. Fishing for the Zander in MV has a long tradition in salty “Bodden” and “Haffen” as well as in freshwater, but landings from natural habitats are recently declining. The demand for fresh, high-quality fish products is rapidly increasing with the growth of tourism in this region of Germany. To compensate declining natural stocks and the increasing demand for Zander, the Institute of Fisheries (IfF Rostock) of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Research Centre for Agriculture and Fisheries (LFA MV) developed a pilot project to offer local fish farmers larvae, fingerlings, and food fish of Zander from aquaculture production. Main aspects of the pilot project were controlled reproduction out of the natural spawning time, production of well-conditioned larvae, first feeding of larvae by natural zooplankton organisms or the use of alternative food organisms, the use of commercial fish feeds and the large-scale production of pikeperch fingerlings and food fish, respectively. First investigations were carried out in a local fish farm at the village “Boek” (MV) to test the methodology of pikeperch aquaculture under practical conditions. The results should be used for the industrial production of pikeperch fingerlings in a modern warm-water recirculation aquaculture system (RAS) at the site of Hohen Wangelin (MV). Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has a high potential for the realisation of pikeperch aquaculture due to the traditional Zander fishery, the knowledge of biology and management and the increasing demand for fresh and high-quality pikeperch products.
