Abstract:
The number of transgenic plants that have to be approved by the European Food Safety Association (EFSA) is constantly increasing. The influence of the transgenic plants on soil composition is, if necessary, to date analyse in several years of field releases which are expensive, time- and labour consuming. Additionally, it has been shown, that environmental influences, like weather or soil heterogeneity overlap possible effects of the transgene, therefore relevant transgene specific effects have never been observed .
In order to identify possibly influences on soil composition, controlled, but nature orientated worst case experiments have to be carried out that allow the selective addition of specific environmental factors. These data should be sufficient to decide whether further field experiments are necessary. Therefore we developed a 3 month requiring fast and efficient in vivo laboratory test system based on composite Vicia hirsuta plants (wild type shoot with transgenic roots) and efficient examination methods, like mass spectrometric “fingerprint” of plant and soil compounds. The Vicia hirsuta system is already established and has shown to be very sensitive for detection of little influences on Rhizobia-Legume-Symbiosis.
