Abstract: Modern technologies for farming are becoming increasingly important. The term "precision agriculture" encompasses satellite positioning, yield mapping, GIS and more. Adoption of these technologies by farmers has been disappointing, one reason being the problem of data management. Since many of the data are spatially referenced, the ISO- and OGC-standardised technologies of a spatial data infrastructure may help to solve this problem. The opportunities for applying these technologies are being investigated at Rostock University as part of the preagro project. Simple interfaces may make background mapping available as a basis for the farm‘s own data, while more advanced services may be used for sending contracts containing spatial information e.g. for soil testing. Future services may even make spatial data processing available via a network interface, allowing automation of complex workflows and access from a range of software and devices.
