Abstract:
For the CORASON2 project research team, the study of change towards sustainable development in rural Europe provides a means of illuminating the shape and dynamics of [the?European knowledge society more generally. We define a knowledge society as one which contains not just one but a plurality of knowledges. These range from scientific, economic, administrative and managerial to local, practical and ecological knowledge, including traditional knowledge repertoires, trial and error and experientially-based discoveries. We further define sustainable development as a knowledge-based set of practices (WP 2: theoretical framework), within which the expert form of knowledge has been dominant, but to which non-expert forms may make a significant contribution. Using case studies of (rural development) programmes and projects from 12 different European countries3 aimed at increasing sustainability, CORASON research seeks to identify the dynamics of these different forms of knowledge and their functioning in relation to the economy and to society in general.
[In this WP no. 5 “Nature Conservation and Biodiversity (NCB)” as one subject in rural development as well as a subject supporting Sustainable Development is analysed. Therefore the objectives of CORASON have been operationalised.
The objectives of WP 5 are to
1. analyse current problems in nature protection (actors involved, knowledge deficits, questions).
2. identify links between the structural components of natural resource use that determine rural development activities.
3. identify the effects of sustainable development discourse on the changing knowledge base and management practices used in resource conservation (resource use and resource protection).
