Abstract: A new model approach was developed at the University of Rostock, in order to improve the practicability of hydrological simulation for wetlands. Accompanied by field measurements on a rewetted riverine fen the model development was adjusted to the special characteristics of peat wetlands. The main assumption of the model is that the flow reactions within the vadose zone are very fast compared to the step size of standard groundwater modelling and therefore can be reproduced with a steady state solution. The model approach was realised in the form of a variable storage coefficient in a three-dimensionally saturated transient flow simulation with FEFLOW. Model testing with input data from a riverine peat wetland and comparing to FEFLOW standard applications showed good results. The model approach achieved as good results as FEFLOW unsaturated flow model, but with a significant lower demand on input data and computing capacity. Ansprechpartner
