AQUAFIMA

Integrating Aquaculture and Fisheries Management towards a sustainable regional development in the Baltic Sea Region

AQUAFIMA (2011-2013) will improve the management of fisheries in Baltic Sea region. The fishery sector faces the consequences of overfishing: The project partners of AQUAFIMA search for measures to recreate the fish stocks in the Baltic Sea and will disclose the potentials of aquaculture based fishery management.

Three thematic work packages determine the tasks and aims of the project.

Work package three “Reviewing fishery policy in the Baltic Sea Region towards an all-embracing approach” focuses on the assessment of the current and future BSR fisheries management, the development of stocking/re-stocking strategies and models in fisheries management and four case-studies for an area-based fisheries management. This also implies the embedding of all relevant stakeholders. Sustainable aquaculture can be an additional income besides the fishery to foster the increasing sea food demand among the BSR citizens.

In work package four “Generation and transfer of knowledge on (re-)stocking strategies and aquaculture technologies” dominant tasks are the collection of knowledge regarding stocking measures and strategies as well as education programmes in the field of Aquaculture.

The fifth work package “Promoting Fish and Aquaculture in Regional Development” concentrates on economic aspects in fisheries and aquaculture. It aims to promote fish as regional trademark product regardless of origin – fishery or aquaculture. Sustainable aquaculture as a means for tourism and regional development shall be explored and utilized basing on different advance analyses.

On 25-26 October 2011, Aquafima was officially started with the Kick-Off Meeting in Riga. Regular project meetings will help to achieve the high demanding aims and accompany other communication tools.

The project partnership consists of twelve partners from seven countries (Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Denmark, and Norway). With the help of associated partners and close cooperation with other projects (e.g. Submariner, Aquabest) we try to extend the project outreach to countries not directly involved (Sweden, Finland, Belarus, and Russia).

Rostock University is involved in all work packages and is supported by external partners.
