Projektbeschreibung:
Rural areas have undergone an immense transformation during the last 150 years. In the recent decades the nature of the driving forces for rural change has changed. New consumptive land use interest emerged while the importance of productive land usage, such as farming, is continuously declining. Both, in Poland as well as in parts of Germany rural transformation has radically been shaped by the realities and the aftermath of the Second World War and the raise and fall of Socialism. At the beginning of the 21st century rural areas in both countries are confronted with agricultural decline, significant demographic changes, and huge unemployment. At the same time due to the European integration these processes in both countries are becoming more and more interrelated through increasing migration, trade and political cooperation. Germany and Poland share extended, mainly rural border areas, too.

The workshop seeks to bring Polish and German Social scientists together, which are affiliated to rural studies. The main intention is to inform both research communities about the institutionalisation and the current academic discourses in rural sociology.
